“A good little welder”

I bought this machine (Hobart Handler 140) more than a year ago and have put it through its paces. It comes with the regulator, switch and hose so you only need the tank. Of course you can use flux core without the tank. Remember that you can get away…Read more

“Hobart 140 Mig Welder”

Great little welder, which I used primarily for autobody panels. Lots of heat, gas valve and regulators work well. Price was unbeatable when compared with a Lincoln or Miller available at big box stores. With free delivery what could be better?Read more

Types of Mig Welders

3765787465 76a2521179 150x150There are various types of welders  but there is one in particular which is used much more than others. One of the most used welders  is the MIG welder which unlike many other types is a wire feed welding machine. This is in contrast to welding methods that make use of a stick or electrode, and it is generally much more efficient for general purpose welding.

When looking for a MIG welder you will generally hear it called by a number of different names and sometimes it can be difficult to tell exactly what it is you are purchasing. That being the case, take this list into consideration when you are looking for a MIG welder, and remember that a MIG welder by any other name is still a MIG welder:

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG)
  • Metal In Gas
  • Gasless Mig Welder
  • Wire Feed Welder
  • Mas Metal Arc Welding

Process Notes

Throughout the welding process the weld puddle will be shielded by a gas known as the Inert Gas or Active Gas. It is possible to use a wire without a shielding gas, and this process will be known as Gas-less wire Welding. Argon Gas is the most common type of shielding gas used in because it does not have any reaction to the MIG welding process and is therefore safe to use.

Gas-less MIG welders are normally only used by home users who operate outside on a regular basis. Note however that these can also be used on job sites and other outdoor locales. The benefit of using a gas-less MIG setup  is that one would not need to worry about wind blowing the shielding gas aside and creating a hazard during the welding process.

Uses

MIG Welders can be used for a number of different applications. For instance you will find that they are used in both the professional and personal circles for virtually any project. From professional vehicle plants to the garage where you are working with wrought iron, these types of welder have a home anywhere.

Power Requirements

Meeting power requirements for the purpose of a MIG welder is not difficult so long as your working area meets the standards.

Power Approximations:

Single Phase MIG Welder: 230-250 Volts

Three-Phase MIG Welder: 400-420 Volts

The power outlet for a MIG welder will need to be considerably bigger than your standard outlet. This of course is to handle the start up current, or that initial power surge as you activate the device. Note that industrial machines will create a larger power surge, and there is a strong chance that you have seen these outlets on several other devices around the house. The majority of standard house plugs will not have the amperage to handle a MIG welder which means you will need to seek out higher amperages. If you are not an experienced electrician it would be in your best interest to call on professional help.

Arc Welding Basics

Arc welding is considered the easiest and most readily available of all the welding processes. Nearly everyone can gain access to an arc welding machine and learn how to arc weld. Also known as stick welding,  the technical name for this type of welding is manual metal arc welding or otherwise, MMAW.

267341 industrial lights 2Arc welding is used in all fields of metalworking and engineering for both fabrication work and maintenance. Metals that can be welded include mild steel in thicknesses from 1/16th up to 2 inches, stainless steel, and cast iron. Arc welding is an excellent method of repair work to cast iron castings.

During the arc welding process is that the arc generates enough sustainable high intensity heat to melt the intended metal at any point it is directed to. Combined with the filler / electrode this action effectively fuses two pieces together.

Choosing an Arc Welder

For general purpose use a welding machine with an AC/DC output is ideal. Using the DC output will give better results as this setting allows easy starts with less sticking. Other advantages using DC settings include easier overhead and vertical welding, less cleanup due to splatter and good looking welds.

As far as power goes the more power you can afford the better. Having said that most arc welding applications can be handled using a machine of 225 Amps. However a machine that has a lower amp rating can still be used to weld say 1 inch steel by making several passes of weld to build up the required bead size.

Since there is a serious shortage of reliable welders to draw from and the demand is increasing daily, you can understand why knowing that welding is not difficult to master is an important thing to know. It is estimated that approximately 80% of all American companies that hire arc welders find it hard to fill vacancies as they come open. It has also been reported that the average age of qualified and professional welders is 54 years. That is a high rate considering that those individuals will be retiring soon. It seems that the field of welding is one of the nation’s best kept secrets when it comes to getting ready for employment in the future.

Many people consider arc welding to be a dangerous occupation because of the electrical currents from high voltage that are used. In the past this may have been true, but today’s advancements in safety equipment and regulations the risk has been reduced by a large amount. Today, arc welding is not any more dangerous than working with plumbing and carpentry. Maybe it is time to get started with a whole new career.

Spot Welding Machines

spot welding machines 150x150Spot Welding machines provide a quick effective method of welding sheet metals plus wire products by utilizing individual weld spots in order to join 2 sheet metal sheets or wire parts together. A spot welder employs a pair of electrodes composed of  copper bars or simply welding electrodes, heat is produced when contact is made fusing the various components together.

There are many various kinds of spot-welding devices, sometimes reffered to as resistance spot welding systems, which are suitable for certain welding operations. Spot welders are available in permanent plus transportable forms of machine. The use of which usually depends upon the actual thickness and also variety of steel to be spot-welded as well as the level of difficulty within the welding method.

These welders are easy to operate and are an efficient welding system for production and factory work.

Press Spot Welding Machines – commonly used through the metal-working sectors these days because of the good versatility, produced in numerous styles easily obtainable in the standard choice of throat depths, electrode forces as well as transformer capabilities.

Seam Spot Welding machines works on the sophisticated control technique, that involves the actual travel speed and also the sequence from current flow to maintain overlapping welds. Even so, the actual clocking routine, spots every centimeter, plus the welding tempo will be interdependent of one another. Pressure, current, plus the size of this weld are given via the welding program.

Resistance Seam Welders Seam welding, a form of resistance welding operation, makes use of a resistance to electric energy with the metallic objects to obtain the welded joints, when the parts are kept pressurized through electrodes.  Seam welding may be traditionally used where by rows of spot-welds are necessary or perhaps water tight joins are needed. Uses for this kind of type of welding can include development of flange welds, water tight joins designed for containers, drums, tin containers, as well as every day radiators, etc.

Bench Spot Welding apparatus    Versatile spot-welders for the work shop and in production. The primary framework is usually of top quality welded steel manufacture . The majority are built to call for  a minimum of bench room. Typically the top arm extension is made in one peice together with the frame. The bottom or secondary arm may get specific tooling or simply use a standard electrode type holder.spot welding
